Join Swapnil Dagliya for a comprehensive 4-day immersion into the soul of Indian movement. This intensive is designed for dancers who want to move beyond memorizing routines and instead master the technical building blocks of India’s most iconic folk and semi-classical forms.

Wednesday, 26 Aug | 18:30 – 21:30 → Bhangra & Jhoomar: The Punjabi Toolkit Focus on the mechanics of "the bounce," earthy weight distribution, and the distinct energy levels of North Indian folk. We break down essential vocabulary through rhythmic drills and stamina building.
Thursday, 27 Aug | 18:30 – 21:30 → Semi-Classical: Rhythm, Grace & Teentaal Posture, hand-eye coordination (Drishti), and the use of Mudras. The focus is on musicality and on Teentaal (16-beat cycle), which strengthens your flow in any dance style. Includes a short applied choreography.
Friday, 28 Aug | 18:30 – 21:30 → BollyFolk: Tippani & Bihu (Prop-Based Fusion) Explore the rhythmic stick-striking of Tippani (Gujarat) and the joyful, rapid hip movements of Bihu (Assam). We will fuse these authentic folk basics into a high-energy Bollywood choreography. Wooden sticks provided.

10:00 – 12:00 | Terah Taali: Rhythmic Percussion Learn the rare art of playing manjeeras (brass cymbals) tied to the body. Focus on seated rhythmic patterns and percussive coordination. Limited spots available due to prop requirements.

The Dance of the Desert From the Thar Desert. Originally performed by the nomadic Kalbeliya tribe, this "snake charmer" dance is known for its hypnotic energy, swirling black skirts and rhythmic precision.
In this 7-week miniseries, Swapnil will guide you through the fundamental elements of this expressive folk style:

In this first half of the semester, Swapnil will guide you through the foundations of the style:

About Swapnil Dagliya:
Swapnil Dagliya is the artistic director and co-founder of Shoonya Dance Centre in Ghent, Belgium. Born in Pune, India—near the heart of Bollywood—he grew up immersed in Indian film music and dance. Swapnil combines his Indian roots with ballet, jazz, modern, and contemporary training to make Indian dance relatable for global audiences.
Certified with Learn Bhangra® and holding a diploma in Indian folk dance, Swapnil specializes in traditional forms like Garba, Ghoomar, Kalbeliya, and other folk styles from across India. He trained at the Broadway Dance Center, New York, and Opus Ballet, Florence, learning from renowned international artists.
From 2008–2018, he led his dance school SPACE in India and taught at Lalit Kala Kendra – University of Pune and Flame University. His foundation in yoga, learned from his grandmother (a student of B.K.S. Iyengar), informs his movement and choreography style.
Now based in Belgium, Swapnil leads ABC a bollywood company, teaches at Shoonya Dance Centre, and curates the Gent India Dans Festival—a celebration of Indian dance's richness and diversity.

What is Garba?
Garba is a vibrant folk dance from Gujarat, India, traditionally performed during the Navratri festival. It’s danced in a circle around a lamp or image of Goddess Durga, symbolizing life’s cycle and creation. With rhythmic steps and joyful energy, Garba brings people together in celebration and community. Dancers wear colorful traditional attire, and the dance pulses to beats of dhol, tabla, and harmonium.

Lavani is a dynamic folk dance from Maharashtra, India, known for its fast rhythms, expressive movements, and storytelling. Set to the famous song Pinga, this dance combines energetic footwork and graceful hand gestures that bring alive the spirit of feminine strength and vibrant culture.

Before the Garba Night, we offer a Garba Workshop with Swapnil from Shoonya Dance Centre.
Learn the basics of Garba so you can join in at the Garba Night. An introduction to the folk dance, with short sequences you can dance during the event.
RISHIRAJ KULKARNI

Rishiraj Kulkarni is a multi-percussionist musician based in India and The Netherlands. His primary instrument being the tabla, with which his journey in music began, he has received incalculable guidance in his musical career from Ustad Zakir Hussain and continues his musical journey in the world of tabla as a disciple of Pandit Yogesh Samsi. He also plays the handpan, Rav Vast, Maschine (hardware/software DAW), marimba, xylophone, and vibraphone to name a few. Since 2012 he has collaborated and performed with artists from various art forms such as illustrators, painters, thespians, poets, singers, ballet dancers, western classical orchestras and Indian classical musicians, performing across Europe and India.
Graduated with Honours in Music from Middlesex University, London (U.K.), Rishiraj specialised in Indian classical music, western classical music, and audio technology. He also holds a Diploma in Music from KM Music Conservatory, Chennai (T.N., India) founded by Oscar award winner, A.R. Rahman where he was awarded as the best Hindustani music performer of the year 2014 — 15.
Rishiraj has two independent albums to his name “Home” (July 2021) and "The Woods" (February 2023) which are available across all streaming platforms. He has composed, performed and recorded the entire album by himself amalgamating the sounds from the tabla, Rav Vast, Maschine and the sounds of nature.
In 2021, Rishiraj founded Svun Sounds, with a passion of introducing unique musical instruments from across the globe and collaborating directly with the independent makers who handcraft their instruments.
SWAPNIL DAGLIYA

Swapnil Dagliya, originally from Pune, India, is an IT engineer by education. He has graduated in contemporary dance and Ballet from the Broadway Dance Center in New York City and Opus Ballet in Florence, Italy.
In 2008, he founded his own dance school, SPACE (Swapnil’s Performing Arts & Contemporary Ensemble), which he managed for ten years. During this period, he also served as the director and curator of AVAYAVA, a contemporary dance festival in India. His teaching experience extends to two universities in India, namely Lalit Kala Kendra at the University of Pune and Flame University.
Swapnil holds a diploma in Indian folk dance and has been teaching Bhangra, a vibrant dance style, for six years. Currently, he serves as the artistic director of Shoonya Dance Centre and an Indian dance company in Ghent, Belgium, named “ABC a bollywood company”.
